Family Session at Home in West L.A.

One thing I love most about my work is returning to families as they grow. I was introduced to Amy through a mutual friend whose family I also photographed for many years. We did some extended family photos with Amy’s kids, parents and sister’s family at their parents’ beautiful home with all three generations (and a dog!). Amy was expecting her third child and she was already eager to discuss another family session when the baby arrived. Having two older kids, Amy knew how important it would be to document those first few days of the baby’s life when everything is a blur. And I wanted her to remember more of that time than just the sleepless nights and diaper changes!

A few days after baby Claire made her arrival, I headed to the family’s home in West LA. My goal was make sure everyone was comfortable and natural – no forced smiles, just interacting alongside everyone as I snapped away. When you have a beautiful new human to look at, it’s pretty easy to capture the outpouring of love.

During a family session like this at home, I make sure to spend time talking to everyone. I wanted to hear from Amy how the birth experience was. I wanted to talk to the older kids about what it was like having a new baby sister. Watching their faces light up at these prompts made for more spectacular, natural images than if I said “say cheese!”

As everyone was getting comfortable with me and my camera, we headed upstairs to the primary bedroom where everyone got on the big bed. I love setups like this because it’s a chance to truly relax and show me what it’s like to be in your home. The big kids took turns holding Claire on their laps and they just loved snuggling up to her. There were just so many natural moments to capture – sweet glances, smiling reactions to whatever the baby was doing, and the energy of the whole family being together.

We also spent some time in the room that would become Claire’s. The space already had some soft toys and books which the big kids were eager to show off. Oh and the family pup made sure to show up for some shots too!

If you’re considering newborn photos, or family photos with any aged kids, I encourage you to consider home-based documentary style photography. Your sacred space is most representative of you and your family. With a newborn, the last thing you need is the added pressure of getting dressed up, choosing props, or stressing about getting that perfect newborn pose. Trust me, everything is already perfect just the way it is.
