Every now and then I like to offer something “off menu” – specialty sessions that inspire me to do something different and connect with returning and new clients. Since my own daughter is entering her senior year of high school, I am pleased to offer for a limited time senior pictures in my signature documentary style!
Why Senior Pictures Matter
You know that weird in-between feeling where your kid is basically an adult but also still leaves cereal bowls in the sink and steals your lipgloss? Yeah, same.
Senior year is wild. It’s a mix of pride and panic, and somewhere in there you realize: oh wow – this is the last season of having them fully under your roof. Soon they’ll be packing up their room and the house will be a little quieter.
That’s why I love photographing soon-to-be-grads at this moment. More than the standard cap-and-gown shots, I love to capture who they really are right now. Their unique style, their funky little rituals, the energy they bring into a room as they sit on the precipice of adulthood. This is a chance to freeze a little piece of time. Senior pictures are also a celebration of where they’ve been and who they’re becoming.
Not Your Average Senior Session
While the standard school portraits are an important rite of passage, most senior photos don’t reflect who they really are. They’re overly posed, super polished, and often take place in the same spots everyone else uses. (Raise your hand if you have awkward studio senior photos of yourself!)
That’s not what I do.
My sessions are documentary-style – real, relaxed, and centered around your teen just being themselves. We hang out, we talk, and listen to music – I follow their lead. Whether they’re goofy, introverted, loud, or chill, I want to photograph that version of them. The one you see every day when they feel most like themselves.
I do take some posed shots, but I promise they will feel natural and authentic.
Some of my favorite sessions take place right at home, documenting the space they’ve grown up in. Teens lounging in their bedroom, sitting on the kitchen counter, hanging out with the dog, relaxing in the backyard. It’s personal, it’s effortless, and it means something. These are senior pictures you will treasure once they’ve left the house.
But we can also take it outside and explore the colors and textures of Los Angeles – a walk through the neighborhood farmers market, hitting up their favorite coffee spot and thrift store, their favorite beach spot, or botanical garden. Wherever they feel most like themselves, I’m in!
