San Diego Backyard Wedding – Heidi & Ryan

Heidi and Ryan’s love story has taken them on many adventures to beautiful locations across the country. As avid hikers, they have explored some of the most awe-inspiring parks and natural wonders in the US. But home is where the heart is, and they knew that their backyard was where they wanted to host their special day. Surrounded by majestic eucalyptus trees in the canyon behind their property, their wedding incorporated both natural beauty and the intimacy of home.

When Heidi and Ryan first hired me, they shared their vision for the day. They wanted something intimate that would reflect their love of each other and the importance of their home as the central gathering space in their lives. The ceremony would be attended by family and a handful of close friends, followed by a celebratory dinner under the twinkling lights and the tree canopy. A larger, more casual party would follow the next day for more of their friends. The whole weekend was full of heartfelt speeches, laughter, and delicious food. As a documentary wedding photographer, this sort of celebration is where I thrive. I get to flex my photojournalistic muscles with moments that aren’t overly scripted and special DIY touches that are truly unique to the couple.

I started the wedding day documenting Heidi and a couple of her closest friends and family members getting ready at the house. Heidi and Ryan’s home is in the same part of San Diego where Heidi grew up. Her childhood home is nearby and her brother lives down the street. It felt extra special to be in a space that holds so many memories.

Ryan got ready in another room of the house as we expertly made sure he avoided any glimpse of Heidi before the ceremony started. Their siblings and cousins were dashing around the house and yard, making sure everything was set up, bringing in the catering for dinner, and that guests were welcomed warmly.

The ceremony began just at the sun was slowly creeping behind the trees. There was a dusky glow that made the entire moment feel incredibly romantic. Heidi’s younger brother officiated the ceremony with heartfelt stories, wit, and charm. After vows and rings were exchanged, we took some family photos and then everyone celebrated over dinner and drinks. Love and laughter were abundant.

The whole day was picture perfect – the sheer joy of seeing two special souls join together with a natural backdrop and surrounded by so much love.

Cheers to Heidi and Ryan on your Happily Ever After!

If this looks like your vision for an intimate backyard wedding, I would love to talk!
